What The Microbiome Means To Me

I woke up one morning a little over twelve years ago after years of just not feeling great. I was determined to figure out what was wrong so I could proactively take care of myself.

That morning I serendipitously met the man who would change my life: Richard Peterson. At the time, he was working as a trainer at Equinox, while also studying with a kind of "mad scientist" in health named Miguel. Richard told me I was too young to feel the way I did and referred me to his “teacher.” When I scheduled an appointment with Miguel at his apartment up on 106th Street, I had no idea what to expect, but I was hopeful that he would offer advice that was better than all the doctors I had seen while struggling with my health throughout my 20s.

Our meeting started with questions -- lots of them. And then he asked me the most essential question of all: Was I ready to commit to changing my life and really re-building and re-calibrating my body and how it functions? In my heart, I knew it was time. I needed to put all of the work and energy I dedicated to other areas of my life into my health.

After that, I spent more than five years getting rid of the bacteria that was in my body and probably had been there since birth. I was consistently enacting different “plans” to cleanse my organs and digestive system in order to re-teach my body how to properly function. It was the most intense commitment I had ever made.

I became a bit obsessed, reading books and researching on the Internet in order to garner all the information I possibly could. This was a bit of a new world for me, and I wanted to delve in and learn as much as possible.

About six years ago, I met a woman named Rachel Goldstein, who would prove to be a friend and a significant part of my new life. She is an amazing woman with a great spirit and, at that moment, was forging forward to create a company called, Agency Of Change. I truly admire all of the work she does for charities, companies and people in general. She is extremely passionate and inspiring and, when we connect, she always makes me aware of something new and interesting and important for me to know.

A year or so ago, I interviewed Dr. Raphael Kellman for Live The Process. He was truly insightful and, because of my personal experience, what he was doing really hit home for me. He was practicing Functional Medicine and his philosophies mirrored the experiences that had shaped my own over the last ten years. Then, a month ago, I found out he was heading up the inaugural Microbiome Medicine Summit and working with Rachel Goldstein to do it. I wanted to stand behind what he and his colleagues were creating, as I consider the information that is being shared invaluable.

It’s now day five; the event ends on March 7th. The summit is free and worth listening to and learning about, as I know many people find it hard to know what to do when they just aren’t feeling well and there isn't an obvious solution.
