Just The Right Amount

Just The Right Amount

My name is: Julija Stoliarova.

I’m known for being: Creative director of Eastwind Hotel & Bar. In this role, I was able to conceptualize, source and execute the interior design for Eastwind’s public spaces and overnight accommodations.

You can find it in: Windham, New York, in the Catskill mountains. The hotel is 24/7, 365 days a year with the exception of buyouts. The property’s bar is open Friday-Sunday, 5-10pm.

Before I launched this space, I was: After modeling across the world and starting my own luxury handbag company with a friend, I entered the world of hospitality, managing spaces including the Standard Hotel's Lounge, Sunset Beach and Indochine. It was during this time that I happened to meet my future husband and Eastwind co-owner, Bjorn Boyer.

What inspired me to create it was: After stumbling upon the property and seeing the sweeping views of Windham Mountain, our team's goal and vision were the same: create a unique Scandinavian home away from home that would help bring together other friends and families. Eastwind’s location, scenery and climate were my main source of design inspiration. I worked to incorporate clean lines, natural hues and minimalist style, reminiscent of the Catskill Mountains, within all aspects of the property.

The idea behind the design is: In designing Eastwind, I was inspired by the Swedish word lagom, meaning just the right amount. The Scandinavian elements provide a design-forward interior, with minimalism and understated decor complementing the serenity of the outdoors.

What makes it special is: Our accommodations are unique because we are able to create a luxury experience while maintaining a close connection to nature. Eastwind was specifically designed to compliment the natural splendor of the Catskills, not distract from it.

One thing you can’t miss is: The firepits scattered across the property bring a sense of warmth to the grounds that elevates the guest experience. During the cooler months, huddling around the fire drinking mulled wine and hot chocolate and making s'mores with the kids is a favorite family activity, and we’re happy we get to share that with our guests.

My favorite secret detail is: The writer's nooks in the Lushna Suites, or our Writer’s Studio located in the Bunk House. Both of these spaces come equipped with your own writer's desk, and the studio has a vintage typewriter. An abundance of natural light makes both of these spots perfect spaces to unwind and begin creating.

In terms of amenities, guests can enjoy our vintage library with books on nature, animals, sports, travel and design. Also, the Hunter Boots x Eastwind Closet offers guests complimentary access to a range of Hunter Boots products including backpacks, boots, umbrellas and blankets for borrowing during their stay.

For me, what it means to hold space is: Holding space, to me, means unapologetically sitting with stillness and absorbing the energy of your surroundings. Eastwind provides guests with a reprieve in the form of their own sanctuary within the Catskill mountains.

Our spaces are so important, especially in this time, because: Eastwind functions as a place to disconnect from the distractions and fast-pace of the outside world, and reconnect with the family and friends we choose to share space with. This time has taught Eastwind guests to embrace nature in all seasons.

The energy of a space can help you live your process because: Living your process begins with your environment. The energy of a space you choose to spend time in directly impacts your process, so the design should bring peace, joy and inspiration to your life.
