My name is: Karen McDonald.
I'm known for being: lodge manager at The Marlborough Lodge in New Zealand, which has a new, amazing spa.
It’s been open since: The spa has been open since November 2018.
This place is special because: The spa has been created in what was once the altar area of a 1910 chapel; and it exudes a tranquility with light coming through the stained glass windows and creating a soft glow. This ties well with the native Rimu timber and green design elements we’ve used. The overhead Moroccan light fixture adds another layer. All of the elements combine to create a very relaxed feel from the moment you walk in.
When it comes to well-being, we’re all about: complete relaxation and feeling at home. All of the treatments focus on taking you away from your thoughts and stresses of the day, so you can think about nothing, focus on birdsong that drifts in from the gardens and slip into a lovely sort of slumber state.
One thing you can’t miss is: our “Head and Foot” massage. There is nothing quite like it. Even if you have very little time or think that you can’t relax enough for a massage, this is the ultimate. You will come away feeling totally relaxed and calm.
My favorite secret detail is: The essential oils we use are made locally and are all natural. Their fragrances are beautiful and unique to New Zealand.
Your body will thank you because: you will be totally relaxed and feel truly pampered.
While you’re in the neighborhood, you must try: The local wineries are what has put this area on the map.
Escaping is part of my process because: It helps me to stop, relax and refocus on what is truly important. We all get caught up in the day-to-day, and escaping lets you leave the unimportant behind.
