A Moment With David Lynch

David Lynch wants to bring Transcendental Meditation (TM) to anyone interested in practicing.

The award-winning director/writer/producer—best known for films like Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive and seminal TV series, Twin Peaks—has worked to raise public awareness of TM via his namesake charity, The David Lynch Foundation (established in 2005). Now, DLF, model Alyssa Miller and Live The Process are collaborating towards this shared goal, with a capsule collection, as well as an exclusive t-shirt designed in association with New York artist Jason Woodside communicating “Change Begins Within, Live The Process.” The collection will be available at Barneys New York with a portion of the proceeds going towards funding for DLF’s mission to make learning TM accessible to everyone globally.

Here, Lynch describes how he first began meditating over 40 years ago and was set on the path to universal peace and enlightenment:

Live The Process: You began practicing Transcendental Meditation over 40 years ago. How did you learn about TM?

David Lynch: I read things and asked questions about many forms of meditation, but nothing seemed right for me. One day, my sister called, said she had started Transcendental Meditation and told me all about it. I liked what I heard and, on top of that, I heard more happiness and self-assurance in her voice; I really felt this form of mediation was what I wanted.

LTP: How has your practice enriched your existence?

DL: I have experienced many benefits: more happiness within, more energy, more love of life, more understanding and more of a flow of ideas and intuition. I see people as friends not enemies. I feel and understand a bigger and bigger picture forming, and experience life as more of a great game than a great torment. For me, TM serves my work and life. It cleans the machine of garbage and brings in pure gold.

LTP: What inspires you to raise awareness about TM? How did you come to found The David Lynch Foundation?

DL: Somehow, I got the motivation to tell others about the huge benefits of meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s Transcendental Mediation. I guess I wished someone had told me earlier in life. The same can be applied to the foundation—I wanted to help bring awareness to others about TM and help those who want to get to it.

LTP: What is your vision for the foundation’s evolution?

DL: The David Lynch Foundation is expanding rapidly. It offers many programs now: for students, entire schools (students, teachers, staff, principal), the homeless, abused children, prison inmates, war veterans and Native Americans. There are programs for people suffering from PTSD, ADD, ADHD, autism, bipolar disorder and other mental illnesses.

We always remind people that, if you are a human being, Transcendental Meditation will work for you and unfold your full cosmic potential, which is supreme enlightenment. In other words, TM is for everyone, regardless of religion, place of birth, color of skin, or profession—it’s for all the glorious human beings. TM brings inner peace to a person, and people practicing it and its advanced techniques together in a group can enliven peace and harmony not only in themselves, but also in the collective consciousness. I see real peace coming to our world one day through these technologies of consciousness that Maharishi revived for this special time on earth. An end to suffering and unfolding enlightenment and peace is what it’s all about.

LTP: What does happiness look like to you?

DL: They say bliss takes up where happiness leaves off. Bliss is physical, emotional, mental and spiritual intense happiness. There is an unbounded ocean of bliss within every human being, and it can easily be tapped with TM. Suffering has a certain look on a person’s face, while bliss has a certain look of happiness and no suffering on a person’s face.

LTP: What does it mean to you to "Live The Process" and how do you do that every day?

DL: It would mean living the benefits of diving within each day. Living the process of twice-daily TM.
