A Glimpse At John Hardy X Joya Sedap Malam

MY NAME IS: Hollie Bonneville Barden.

I’M KNOWN FOR BEING:

Creative director of John Hardy.

I'M HELPING TO LAUNCH:

The John Hardy x Joya Sedap Malam candle. A collaboration between two modern-day artisans that evokes a sensory experience reminiscent of John Hardy’s Ubud, Bali workshop and showroom.

YOU CAN FIND IT AT:

Joya, Joya’s Flagship in Clinton Hill, JohnHardy.com and John Hardy’s New York City and Houston boutiques starting December 1.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL IS:

Handcrafted from reclaimed clay and detailed to recreate John Hardy’s signature Palu technique, this one-of-a-kind piece balances elements both soft and strong. Its organic contrast—black porcelain against white wax, smooth edges punctuated with undulating patterns—represents the powerful duality of nature.

Shaped by hand from start to finish, recycled porcelain clay is rolled, flattened, and artfully textured using a sewing needle to honor John Hardy’s hammered textures. The prototype is then hand-cast in plaster and silicone to allow for relative uniformity in production. Still, each piece bears slight differences and original marks of the artists. The finishing touch: 22-karat liquid gold is hand-painted around the rim to evoke the precious metals used in the John Hardy Collections.

ONE THING YOU CAN'T MISS IS:

Once the candle has dimmed to an end, the vessel can be repurposed as a jewelry bowl. Simply hand wash carefully with warm, soapy water after use or place in the freezer overnight to remove remaining wax.

YOUR BODY WILL THANK YOU BECAUSE:

The intoxicating blend of tuberose, jasmine and sandalwood will mentally transport you to the grounds of John Hardy’s Ubud, Bali workshop and showroom. The scent transforms a room, moving, evolving, deepening both body and mind to a place of absolute freedom.
