“Sleep is the best meditation.” — The Dalai Lama

Sleeping has never been an issue for me. I have vivid childhood memories of my grandmother and mother talking about how poorly they’d rested—or didn’t rest at all, but I could never relate.

Until about five or six year ago. At that time, I found myself in limbo in multiple respects and I think it all just caught up with me. I still had an easy time falling asleep, but I would wake up in the middle of the night and be up for hours and hours.

We all know what happens then: your mind starts mulling over a laundry list of to-dos, shoulds, regrets and worries. Until I could eventually relax my mind and fall back to sleep, I’d just lie there, agonizing over every aspect of my life.

What started as a sporadic problem began to develop into the norm. I was struggling nightly. That’s when I started to investigate what I could do to interrupt this negative—and now habitual—cycle and get back to real rest. After all, like many of us, I know sleep keeps me going. It’s what allows me to be passionate, vibrant and alive. Instead of all that happening naturally, I was suddenly aware of having to work really hard to keep my energy up.

As I tend to do, I made a conscious decision to research every possible adjustment I could make to solve the problem and relax again. It’s been a long road, but I think I’m finally in a good place.

On the positive side, sleep has become a giant topic in the media. The pandemic didn’t do any of us any favors in that department, so there’s a great demand for answers. But, on the flip-side, navigating the world of getting good sleep is overwhelming! How do you know what’s right for you?

This month, we’ll be featuring people, products and experiences that focus on  changing the narrative of sleep from a source of stress to a positive respite for restoration, healing and rejuvenation. Finding joy and serenity in the darkness can be magical as dreaming, adding dimension to our reality.

Sweet Dreams!
