My name is: Gretchen Rubin.

My book is called: The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles That Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (and Other People’s Lives Better, Too).

The publication date is: September 12, 2017.

I was inspired to write it when: I began to notice very distinct patterns among people’s attitudes and behavior. Why did some people (but not me) keep saying, “I can always make time for other people, but I can never take time for myself?” Why did some people (but not me) object that they’d never keep a New Year’s resolution because “January 1 is an arbitrary date?” I wanted to understand how I was different from these people—and why they seemed to resemble each other. As I explored this issue, I began to grasp the Four Tendencies framework.

It's about: identifying the one simple question that gives you explosive self-knowledge—how do you respond to outer and inner expectations? Once you know this, you know if you’re an Upholder, a Questioner, an Obliger, or a Rebel. Your Tendency makes a huge difference in how to get yourself to do what you want. I explain how to identify your Tendency; the strengths and weaknesses of each Tendency; how to apply the Tendencies in different contexts, such as at work, at home, in a health-care setting, or in life; how to communicate more effectively using the Four Tendencies, and what to expect when Tendencies pair up.

My hope is that readers will: learn more about themselves so they can more effectively build the lives they want. And if they’re trying to work with other people, they’ll get more insight into other people—and be more effective in working with them. The Four Tendencies help us become happier, healthier, more productive, and more creative.

My next book might be: Outer Order, Inner Calm.

The title of my autobiography would be: Be Gretchen.

If I was a character from fiction, I'd be: Hermione Granger.
