KIYA KNIGHT
I’ve always been a “live in the moment” kind of gal, and I rarely say “no” to an epic celebration, especially around the holidays. So, like a lot of others, I find myself asking, “How can I have all the fun without feeling like I’ve taken ten steps back with my health and fitness program?” To me, nothing feels better than waking up New Year’s day knowing that I look and feel my very best, even if I did just dance and indulge all night long like a wild girl.
As fun as the holidays are, they can also be an über stressful. So, not only is it important to maintain your hard-earned physique, but it’s also essential to practice activities that lessen the inevitable anxiety and overload that come with the season.
Below, I’ve mapped out my top five hacks for staying hot after the holidays—body and mind. You can step into this New Year in the best shape of your life, without giving up the goodies:
1. Make it a Quickie:
Short bursts of exercise are a super efficient way to boost fitness and burn fat. One study published in November 2014 showed that even three minutes of intense activity improves performance and body composition.
Everyone has ten minutes to move mindfully in a day. I recommend working out first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Not only will you be burning yesterday’s calories, but you’ll also spike your fat-burning abilities for the rest of the day.
2. Drink Water:
Staying hydrated is the key to keeping your system functioning at its very best. This is important for digestion and nutrient absorption, as well as for keeping your complexion clear and your skin healthy and glowing.
Drinking plenty of water can also suppress your appetite, so you don’t go overboard at the buffet. It also prevents headaches, helps with belly bloat and boosts your metabolism.
Bottoms up!
3. Practice Gratitude:
It’s something everyone is talking about, but what does it mean to “practice” gratitude? You might think it’s enough to just feel grateful on a daily basis, but, if you want to get your freaky magic vibes fired up, practicing gratitude is the key.
Keep a journal and write down five things you are grateful for every day. Do this for 30 days and watch your energy, attitude, body and life transform in powerful, positive ways.
4. Meditate:
Staying connected, grounded and centered during the holidays can be a nightmare. Despite the fun and celebration, this time of year can get wicked stressful.
Between the family, parties, presents and food, it’s a good idea to carve out some “me” time to get quiet and connected. This can be the difference between keeping your cool and having a smooth season and getting sucked into a full on drama storm.
It’s important to keep healthy boundaries during high-stress times of year, when it can feel like everything is pulling at your attention. Remember, you don’t have to do it all. Less is sometimes more, and even five minutes of quiet meditation can feel life-changing.
5. Buddy Up:
Staying motivated, even when the sun isn’t shining, is the key to maintaining your summer body all throughout the colder months. Having a workout or meditation buddy can keep you accountable and seriously up the enjoyment factor of both.
Reach out to a friend or family member and ask them to buddy up. Not only are you doing something good for yourself, but you’re also helping someone else who will thank you big time later.
Being of service always feels fantastic and has a way of bringing even more good into your life.
