Would you believe me if I told you that you never need to buy a bottle of pricey shampoo again?

For strong, shiny locks with that enviable bounce, your money is better spent at the market than at the salon. I’m happy to tell you that having healthy hair is easier than you think, and it certainly doesn’t involve any expensive products!

Our bodies respond beautifully to proper care. These are my top 6 tips for gorgeous hair:

1. Cut the crap

The key to looking (and feeling) better, from the hair on your head on down, is to cut the nasty stuff. Ditch sugar, alcohol and processed foods and boost your intake of enzyme, mineral antioxidant and nutrient-rich foods.

2. Eat real food

So many things we eat contain just what we need for beautiful hair: For growth, silica is key, which means you should consume lots of green leafy vegetables, cucumber, zucchini, mango and beans. Zinc is equally important and can be found in foods like eggs, pecans, Brazil nuts and fresh oysters.

3. Get your B’s . . .

Vitamin B and biotin are key to strengthening the liver and cleansing the blood, which contributes to long, healthy locks. Raspberries are a great source, as are lean animal proteins, fish, eggs, beans and other berries.

4. . . . and C’s

This nifty vitamin boosts collagen production, which keeps hair strong. Some of my favorite food sources of vitamin C are leafy greens, strawberries, peppers and, of course, citrus fruits.

5. Bulk up on protein

Many people don’t eat enough protein, which causes their hair to thin. Pack your plate with plenty of protein from sources like lean meat, fish, eggs, nuts, seeds and legumes.

6. Don’t fear fat

To get that glossy shine, essential fatty acids are key. Think fish oil, krill oil or udos oil—and go for the good quality ones. Other great sources of healthy fat include nuts, seeds, flax, coconut, avocado and fatty fish like salmon.
