My name is: Candice Kumai.

My book is called: Kintsugi Wellness: The Japanese Art of Nourishing Mind, Body, and Spirit (Harper Wave).

The publication date is: April 17, 2017.

I was inspired to write it when: I was going through a difficult time in my life and was in search of something to heal my heart and spirit. I turned to the Japanese traditions I was raised with and discovered the art of kintsugi or “golden repair.”

It's about: “Kintsugi” refers to the art of reconstructing broken pottery or fabrics by mending the pieces back together with gold. The result in the end is something even more beautiful, not despite its cracks and imperfections, but because of them. The philosophy and practice of kintsugi is not about perfection—it’s about healing, becoming whole and finding the beauty in everything. The book includes recipes, personal stories, memories and some really gorgeous photos, if I do say so myself!

My hope is that readers will: cultivate this idea to find balance, joy and good health by at once celebrating their “flaws” and accepting change in their lives. We can all improve—in Japanese, we call this “kaizen.”

My next book might be: I’d love to create a Japanese travel guide that focuses on wellness or, better yet, a book that explores ancient and traditional wellness practices around the globe.

The title of my autobiography would be: Wabi Sabi: My Imperfectly Perfect Journey Toward Self-Acceptance & Self Love.

If I was a character from fiction, I’d be: I’m gonna take it back to the SATC days and say I’d be a cross between Samantha Jones and Carrie Bradshaw.
